Ramaphosa Names New Judicial Appointments Across South Africa

(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved a series of judicial appointments affecting multiple courts across the country, with the Presidency saying the changes are intended to reinforce the legal system and enhance the delivery of justice.

According to a statement released Wednesday, the appointments were carried out “in terms of section 174(6) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, and on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission."

The newly announced appointments cover positions in the Supreme Court of Appeal as well as the Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and Western Cape divisions of the High Court.

Among the most notable selections is Madam Justice Thandi Victoria Norman, who is set to take office as a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal beginning May 15, 2026. Mr Justice Bashier Vally and Madam Justice Leonie Windell were also named to the same court, with their appointments becoming effective on June 1, 2026.
The Presidency additionally confirmed that Justice Aubrey Phage Ledwaba will assume the role of Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court starting May 15, 2026.

In the Eastern Cape, Ms Nolubabalo Cengani-Mbakaza was appointed to the Mthatha division of the High Court effective July 1, 2026. Advocate Sally Ann Collett and Professor Nomthandazo Patience Ntlama-Makhanya were also selected for positions in the Makhanda division.

Further judicial appointments were announced for the Western Cape Division of the High Court, including Rodges Deon Barendse, Advocate Diane Margaret Davis SC, Advocate Ncumisa Thoko Mayosi, Advocate Pinda Njokweni, and Advocate Phillipa Susan Van Zyl.
