US media thrives on fueling pre-packaged outrage

(MENAFN) The US mainstream media often thrives on fueling pre-packaged outrage. Predictable narratives are amplified, while equally important events are conveniently overlooked. One recent incident has laid bare both the media’s ideological bias and the priorities of the elite whose perspectives it promotes: the shocking murder of a young Ukrainian woman on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

On August 22, 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was attacked in cold blood by career criminal Decarlos Brown Jr. As she sat quietly on the train, he approached from behind and stabbed her three times in the neck, then calmly walked away still holding the knife, which dripped with her blood.

The brutal assault was captured on surveillance cameras, yet Charlotte’s Democratic Mayor Vi Lyles initially sought to keep the footage from the public, citing respect for the victim’s family. Eventually, the video leaked and the story spread widely online. Still, mainstream media outlets largely ignored it. Even when amplified by prominent figures on social media, the story failed to penetrate the editorial walls of major legacy organizations.

No major outlets—including prominent newspapers, public broadcasters, and global news agencies—covered the incident. While one might assume that at least a single outlet would break from the pack, that did not occur. As observed by a well-known media analyst, “Reporting is done in herds, no one wildebeest can break formation without screwing things up for the others. So, they’ll all hold the line, until they all stop holding the line.”

At the time of writing, it appears the media herd is slowly shifting. Some version of the story, though likely diluted, seems poised to enter mainstream coverage.
