Syrian President Bound for New York to Join UN General Assembly

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa departed Sunday for a historic trip to New York, marking the first time a Syrian leader has attended the UN General Assembly since 1967, according to the Syrian presidency.

Sharaa is slated to engage in multiple high-level meetings and dialogues with global leaders and delegations during the session.

This visit takes place amid Damascus’s urgent push to secure the permanent removal of U.S. sanctions, which continue despite some recent relaxations. These sanctions largely originate from a 2019 U.S. law penalizing the former Assad regime for alleged war crimes during the Syrian civil war.

Since the removal of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Syria’s newly established administration has embarked on political and economic reforms, prioritizing social unity and fostering enhanced cooperation with both regional and international partners.

Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, effectively ending the Baath Party’s long-standing regime that had controlled the country since 1963. In January, Ahmad Al-Sharaa assumed leadership of a new transitional government.
