China’s Jiangmen Reports Over 1,700 Chikungunya Cases
(MENAFN) The southern Chinese city of Jiangmen has recorded more than 1,700 instances of Chikungunya fever, a mosquito-borne viral disease, a news agency reported on Saturday.
Officials in the Guangdong Province city confirmed on Friday a total of 1,714 Chikungunya cases, prompting a public health emergency response.
During a press briefing on Saturday, authorities stated that all reported infections were mild, with no severe or fatal cases documented. Consequently, the city administration officially announced a Level III public health emergency on Friday.
Chikungunya virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, with fever and joint pain being the most frequent symptoms.
While the virus is seldom deadly, newborns, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of serious illness.
