Trump Urges Europe "to Be Very Careful" Over Fine Against Musk's X
"Oh, that's a nasty one. Elon has not called me to ask for help on that one. But no, it's a tough thing. I don't think it's right," Trump declared during a White House gathering, referencing former political advisor Elon Musk, who controls the social media giant.
"I'll speak about it later. I'm going to get a full report on it. Look, Europe has to be very careful. They're doing a lot of things. We want to keep Europe, Europe," he added.
The European Commission levied its €120 million (approximately $140 million) sanction against X Friday, documenting numerous violations of the EU's Digital Services Act—the inaugural enforcement action under the groundbreaking legislation.
Commission officials determined X deceived platform users via the "deceptive design" of its blue verification badge, failed compliance with advertising disclosure mandates, and restricted academic researchers from obtaining publicly available information.
Regulators concluded X's blue checkmark infrastructure—enabling paid "verified" designation—fundamentally mischaracterizes authentication standards.
Such practices, authorities determined, leave users vulnerable to fraudulent schemes and identity theft, breaching Article 25(1) of the DSA, which expressly forbids manipulative design mechanisms.
